Movie Night: Zapatista (1999)

January 10, 2025

We're kicking off 2025 with our January movie night. We'll be watching the 1999 documentary Zapatista.
From the filmmakers:
"January 1, 1994. The day the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) comes into effect. A few minutes after midnight in Southeastern Mexico, several thousand Mayan soldiers take over half the state of Chiapas, declaring a war against the global corporate power they say rules Mexico. They call themselves the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN)."
This film combines exclusive interviews with Zapatista leaders like Subcomandante Marcos with notable international perspectives from Noam Chomsky, Mumia Abu-Jamal, and Zack de la Rocha. This Indigenous-led, anarchistic uprising was influential and inspirational to the global left through the 1990s and beyond. While we don't hear as much about them today, they are still holding space in defiance of global capital and empire today.
Discussion will follow the showing.
This event is free and open to the public. The Black Cat House welcomes all ages, and is a drug and alcohol-free venue. To help keep everyone safe and healthy, we ask that all guests wear face masks in our space. We are wheelchair accessible
