The nerds at the Black Cat House would like to honor the 60th anniversary of Star Trek's debut on NBC. We are frustrated with the tantrums of certain reactionary (mostly White, male) nerds who want to complain about their beloved sci-fi franchises "suddenly going woke!"

Star Trek has literally been woke since 1966! Creator Gene Roddenberry infused Trek from the jump with the utopian vision of a future where humanity outgrows its prejudices and goes out into the greater galaxy with a spirit of cooperation and exploration. Star Trek's vision has always included feminism, anti-racism, post-capitalist economics, concern for protecting the environment, an anti-war stance, pushback against religious fundamentalism, and many more obviously left-leaning positions.

If you'd like to celebrate this milestone with us, we'll be opening up the Black Cat House at 7 PM on Friday to get together and watch a couple classic episodes of _Star Trek: The Original Series_. That's right, this is an unofficial bonus event!

We're kicking off our fall calendar with _Dolores_, a 2017 documentary about the legendary labor organizer Dolores Huerta. We thought this would be a good way of honoring Labor Day and Hispanic Heritage Month. Huerta was also back in the news earlier this year with the bombshell revelation that she was sexually assaulted by César Chávez; we'd like to keep that in mind also as we watch this month's movie.

Here's more about _Dolores_ from the PBS website:

"Who is Dolores Huerta? One of the most important, yet least known activists of our time, Dolores Huerta was an equal partner in founding the first farm workers union with César Chávez. Tirelessly leading the fight for racial and labor justice, Huerta evolved into one of the most defiant feminists of the 20th century — and she continues the fight to this day, in her late 80s. [UPDATE: She's now 96!] With unprecedented access to this intensely private mother of 11, Peter Bratt's film _Dolores_ chronicles Huerta’s life from her childhood in Stockton, California to her early years with the United Farm Workers, from her work with the headline-making grape boycott launched in 1965 to her role in the feminist movement of the '70s, to her continued work as a fearless activist. Featuring interviews with Gloria Steinem, Luis Valdez, Angela Davis, her children and more, Dolores is an intimate and inspiring portrait of a passionate champion of the oppressed and an indomitable woman willing to accept the personal sacrifices involved in committing one’s life to social change."

Discussion will follow the screening.

Once again, this event is free and open to the public. The Black Cat House welcomes all ages, and is a drug and alcohol-free venue. To help keep everyone safe and healthy, we ask that all guests wear face masks in our space. We are wheelchair accessible.
