7/22/15 Minutes: Copy Machine, Sama, Fall Calendar

In attendance: Jackson (secretary), Ty (moderator)
Start time: 7:00 PM

1. Event Review – We showed 416 on Saturday night. Turnout was a bit low, but the discussion was very good.

2. Upcoming Event – Trekkies For Humanism returns this Friday. We’re ready for it. We’ll be sure to plug it on Facebook in the next couple of days.

3. Reimbursement – Jackson bought some new dry-erase markers for the house, as ours were dried out. We reimburse him $3.21 for the expense.

4. Copy Machine – We still need to replace ours. Jackson will see what he can find locally. We’re thinking we have a budget of around $200.

5. Sama – The concert/discussion is coming up fast! Sammi reports he is nearly done with our flier. Jackson will be making the Facebook event at the conclusion of the meeting tonight, and will also be sending Sama another follow-up email.

6. Fall Calendar – Ty still needs some digital files to build the calendar; he’ll need to contact Ashley about that.

Meetings are returning to Monday nights at 7 PM. Open hours will not return for fall.

Will we continue to run Trekkies For Humanism?

Neurodiversity as a Social Justice Issue (a community discussion)

    April 5, 2025

The Black Cat House is excited to host a community discussion about the social justice aspects of neurodiversity on Saturday, April 5th, 2025, from 1 to 3 P.M. in honor of Autism Awareness Month. Neurodiversity is the theory that argues people experience and interact with the world in many different ways because of actual differences in our brains. This is an accepting and inclusive framework that grew out of the disability rights movement of the late 20th Century, which argues that differing brains simply have different strengths and weaknesses and that there isn't one "right" way of thinking or being. For the purposes of this discussion, we're intending to focus most specifically on the autism spectrum and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Such folks are commonly described as neurodivergent.

The focus of our discussion will be on the social challenges faced by neurodivergent folks, particularly the impact on employment and job skills. We will discuss the ins and outs of being neurodivergent and how it affects our community members with autism and/or ADHD when employed, seeking employment, or learning new job skills. We also hope to discuss any ideas or solutions/resources that others have found to be helpful or have benefited from in our community! Join us to discuss these issues as we explore accommodations, resources, strategies to advocate, or offer other support for neurodivergent folks in our community!

As always, our events are free and open to the public. The Black Cat House welcomes all ages, and is a drug and alcohol-free venue. To help keep everyone safe and healthy, we ask that all guests wear face masks in our space. We are wheelchair accessible.

  • Movie Night: Manufacturing Consent - Noam Chomsky and the Media

Movie Night: Manufacturing Consent - Noam Chomsky and the Media

    April 11, 2025

Our April movie will be the 1992 documentary _Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media_, directed by Mark Achbar and Peter Wintonick. Noam Chomsky is a world-famous activist/academic who has spoken and written extensively about human rights, propaganda, and imperialism. The film's name is borrowed from Chomsky's most important book about the corporate media, which he first published in 1988 with co-author Edward Herman. The documentary is partially biographical on Chomsky, with the filmmakers following him around the world. But the film is largely a visual adaptation of Chomsky and Herman's book, using their "Propaganda Model" to expose the double standard in U.S. media coverage of human-rights abuses around the world, and how this bias serves the interests of the American Empire.

While we strongly recommend the film, we must also acknowledge that it is nearly 3 hours long. While the visual editing is much more interesting than most documentaries of this kind, we know it may be too much for some of y'all to sit through. Please note that we will be starting at 6 PM (an hour earlier than our typical movie nights), and we will be taking a 10 minute intermission about halfway through the film. Discussion will follow the film.

We would also like y'all to know that we will be doing another event exploring Herman and Chomsky's "Propaganda Model" on Saturday, May 17th, from 1-3 PM. Stay tuned for more information about that!
