Movie Night: Sorry to Bother You

May 15, 2026

Our May movie will be Sorry to Bother You. It is the directorial debut from Boots Riley, and stars LaKeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Jermaine Fowler, Omari Hardwick, Terry Crews, Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Danny Glover, Steven Yeun, and Armie Hammer.
The film follows Cassius "Cash" Green (Stanfield), whose poverty is so severe that he lives out of his uncle's garage. Cash struggles with his new telemarketing job, until an older coworker encourages him to lean into his "White voice." Cash's "White voice" (Cross) is so effective that he quickly "moves upstairs" in the company to become a "power caller", where he gets to sell truly heinous things like slave labor for much better commissions. Meanwhile, a union organizer (Yuen) leads the rank-and-file telemarketers out on strike in hopes of getting the workplace organized. Cash's upward mobility allows him to ignore all of that, and his salesmanship draws the attention of an eccentric billionaire (Hammer) who has even bigger plans for Cassius Green. (And that's where the story gets REALLY weird...)
Sorry to Bother You must be seen to be believed! Realistic comedy is blended with surreal sci-fi elements to skewer class and race under late capitalism. With Riley coming back to theaters with his newest film I Love Boosters on May 22nd, we felt like it was time to revisit his first film.
Discussion will follow the film.
