Movie NIght: Killing Gaza

December 8, 2023

Our December movie will be the 2018 documentary _Killing Gaza_. The following description comes from their own website at killinggaza.com:

"In Killing Gaza, independent journalists Max Blumenthal and Dan Cohen documented Israel’s 2014 war on Gaza.

Yet this film is much more than a documentary about Palestinian resilience and suffering. It is a chilling visual document of war crimes committed by the Israeli military, featuring direct testimony and evidence from the survivors."

We thought it would be a timely reminder that what the Israeli military is doing in the Occupied Territories of Palestine right now is nothing new. The Gaza Strip, in particular, has been described as an "open-air prison" for the last 15 years because of the brutal conditions of the Israeli blockade. Unfortunately, mainstream U.S. media is so overwhelmingly pro-Israeli that it's rare to get any of this context from the big news outlets. We hope that our friends will continue to seek out more independent voices and perspectives like those being offered in _Killing Gaza_. Discussion will follow the film.

This event is free and open to the public. The Black Cat House welcomes all ages, and is a drug and alcohol-free venue. To help keep everyone safe and healthy, we ask that all guests wear face masks in our space. We are wheelchair accessible.

Christmas's War on Us (a community discussion)

December 16, 2023

You've heard of the "War on Christmas," but have you ever considered that there might actually be a war on us instead? During the holiday season, stress often comes to a head from all the traveling, financial and budget issues from gift-buying, and the ongoing grind of work from day-to-day. Good luck if you celebrate a holiday other than Christmas, as other similarly timed religious observances or winter celebrations much older than Christmas don't receive the same respect--or time off work.

And yet, the Christian Right has the audacity to claim that their holiday is the one being disrespected. They continue to tread on the basic rights and humanities of marginalized groups, leaving millions of people with a bad taste in their mouth when they're reminded of the "reason for the season." While those same conservatives also complain about phrases like "happy holidays," even this seems to be an effort to turn everyone else's holidays into the same commercialized, Christmas-flavored mess.

The holidays are supposed to be enjoyable, so what, exactly, happened? Why is holiday cheer so hard to come by, and why does it feel like it needs to be bought?

This event is free and open to the public. The Black Cat House welcomes all ages, and is a drug and alcohol-free venue. To help keep everyone safe and healthy, we ask that all guests wear face masks in our space. We are wheelchair accessible.
