September 11, 2024(1 event) The Beehive Collective Returns to Lincoln! At UNL's Nebraska Union – Do you hear that buzz?
We're excited to announce that the Beehive Design Collective is returning to Lincoln! They are "a wildly motivated, all-volunteer, activist arts collective dedicated to 'cross-pollinating the grassroots' by creating collaborative, anti-copyright images for use as educational and organizing tools. We work as word-to-image translators of complex global stories, shared with us through conversations with affected communities." The Bees are on a national tour this summer to "REVIVE the HIVE!"
For more information about the Bees, we encourage you to visit their website at:
https://beehivecollective.org/ The Bees will be presenting on two of their mural projects called "The True Cost of Coal" and "Mesoamérica Resiste." The former is about the ecological devastation wrought by coal mining in Appalachia, while the latter is about the effects of globalization in Latin America. Both pieces also strongly reflect the power of local, grassroots resistance to these forces.
This event will be held at the Nebraska Union (1400 R St.) on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's City Campus. We will be in the Centennial Room on the second floor. This event is free and open to the public.
This event is co-hosted by The Black Cat House and Common Root Mutual Aid Center. We are also grateful for the assistance of our allies on campus for helping us to book this room.

September 13, 2024(1 event) Movie Night: The Breadwinner – Our September movie at the Black Cat House will be the 2017 animated drama The Breadwinner. It was directed by Nora Twomey, and is an adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name by Deborah Ellis. It was an international production produced in Canada, Ireland, and Luxembourg. The film is a stunning work of animation with poetic and unflinching storytelling by the Irish studio Cartoon Saloon.
Parvana is a preteen girl in Afghanistan. After her father is sent to prison by the Taliban, she must become the sole income for her mother, sister, and little brother (while also trying to bring her father back home). She disguises herself as a boy, in her dead brother's clothes, as women are not allowed to leave their home unaccompanied. While trying a series of low-paying jobs, Parvana makes unlikely allies who help her rescue her father from a brutal prison as the country falls into war.
Content Warning: violence against women
Discussion will follow the movie.
This event is free and open to the public. The Black Cat House welcomes all ages, and is a drug and alcohol-free venue. To help keep everyone safe and healthy, we ask that all guests wear face masks in our space. We are wheelchair accessible

September 29, 2024(1 event) The Black Cat House Garden Tour (part of Lincoln TRUE 2024) – The Black Cat House will be hosting an "open house" in our yard as part of Lincoln TRUE (Tour for Rewilding Urban Environments). We will be out here on Sunday afternoon from 1-6 PM. We hope you'll come and see our native plants, raised garden beds, rainwater collection system, and more. Come and harvest some herbs from our herb spiral, or pick up a "Compost the Rich!" sticker from our propaganda table on the porch. As always, this event is free and open to the public.
Here's what Lincoln TRUE shared to their own Facebook event page:
"Do you love nature? So do we! So we're calling all nature lovers to attend the Lincoln Tour for Rewilding Urban Environments on September 29th: Featuring multiple growing spaces to visit and experience on a tour around Lincoln. Follow our map bit.ly/LTRUE2024 on a tour of 12 pollinator gardens along with guided tours of Hawley Hamlet and Wilderness Park (Pioneers Blvd Entrance).
