8/21/17 Minutes: Emergency Meeting, Dismantling Patriarchy

In attendance: Jackson (moderator), Ty (secretary)
Start time: 8:00 PM

1. Emergency Meeting to Counter Hate Group – The meeting was delayed for an hour due to our presence being requested to talk about a response to the ACT America white supremacist hate group rallying on September 9th. Jackson went on our group’s behalf, and reported that the discussion is still ongoing at the time our meeting was postponed to, as many people came out to talk over the issue. We will do our best to remain in the loop, as we also have a reading group scheduled on that day, and we want to make sure that it doesn’t conflict with any leftist actions being held.

2. Upcoming Event – The Dismantling Patriarchy workshop is this Saturday. We did not get a flier sent to us, so we’ll have to do without. We’ll donate $50 to the speaker.

3. Treasury Update – Jackson posted a treasury update, and we decided to place $100 of the general treasury into the speaker’s treasury, $50 of which will be spent for the Dismantling Patriarchy.

Meeting adjourned: 8:45 PM

Tabled items: Articles for Discussion, Graphic Designer, Stuff to Buy (canopy, stuff to secure bike rack, labels, 7×7 no-slip outdoor mat for porch, new SSD hard drive for public laptop

8/14/17 Meeting Minutes: Solidarity for CVille, Fall Calendars!, Last-Minute Events?!

In attendance: Jackson (secretary), Ty (moderator)
Start time: 7:00 PM

1. Event Review – We ran Fukushima Uncensored (maybe) on Friday night. Jackson may have accidentally loaded the wrong documentary, which had also been posted to YouTube under the same title. We had a great turnout though, and a pretty lively discussion afterward.

2. Vigil – We co-hosted an emergency vigil along with DSA Lincoln on behalf of the anti-fascists attacked by Neo-Nazis in CVIlle, Virginia this weekend. On less than 36 hours notice, we helped to rally about 500 people to Downtown Lincoln and raised almost $1000 for the survivors’ medical bills.

3. Solidarity Donation for CVille – We’ll also make a $50 donation to the comrades in Virginia from our treasury.

4. Reimbursement – Ty got our fall calendars printed, and he needs to be reimbursed. We agree that he’ll get his $12.07 back.

5. Calendar distro – Ty and Jackson made plans to get our fall calendars up tomorrow.

6. September Reading Group – Jackson took a few minutes of our relatively light meeting to get our first fall event up to Facebook, and Ty copied it to our website.

7. Last-minute Summer Events – DSA has contacted Jackson today about running another Young Socialists educational discussion on Tuesday the 29th. Jackson is free that day, so he’ll open up the House and host them.

We’ve also received an email about a travelling speaker who wants to host a workshop called “Dismantling the Patriarchy: Via Communication” here on Saturday the 26th from 6-8 PM. We’re interested in this event, and Jackson can open the House and host. Jackson will call the provided number and work out the logistics.

Meeting adjourned: 7:50 PM

Tabled items: Articles for Discussion, Graphic Designer, Stuff to Buy (canopy, stuff to secure bike rack, labels, 7×7 no-slip outdoor mat for porch, new SSD hard drive for public laptop

8/7/17 Minutes: Sama and Bloth Show Cancellation, Fall Calendar

In attendance: Chris, Jackson (moderator), Ty (secretary)
Start time: 7:00 PM

1. Event Review – Last Saturday was “What is Anarchism?” and it was a good turnout and a good discussion! It was very animated and just about everyone had the chance to chime in, either with questions or responses. We need to remember to bring the topic up more often than we have. Asking folks in the beginning what anarchism meant to them was a good idea as far as framing what we should talk about, but Ty recommends that we might have framed the question as “what do you want to know/learn about anarchism?” in order to further guide the discussion to make sure what topics we really should touch on. We also set up a literature table, which was a good decision as people did check some books out (we should really prioritize buying more anarchist literature). Chris recommends having a little more programming involved: examples of anarchism in practice, summaries of anarchist viewpoints, etc.

2. Upcoming Event – Our movie night is Fukushima Uncensored, and we’ll be streaming it online. We’re ready to go!

3. Sama – Sama is not going to be able to make it, so we’ll have to make some announcements that her show’s unfortunately cancelled. No FB event, but it was on the calendar, so we need to spread the word the best we can. We’ll make a few posts on Facebook and on the website.

We need to get confirmation from Lincoln Democratic Socialists of America as far as how they actually want to shorten their name – our shorthand for it has not been confirmed as their official shortened title.

7/24/17 Minutes: Fundraiser, Fall Calendar

Start time: 7:06 PM

1. Event Review: We showed The Great Dictator on Friday, to great attendance! The discussion was light, but it was a fun event.

2. Robert’s Fundraiser: We sent in a fundraiser description to Robert, which he likes but he’d like to add some dimension of community interaction. He suggested having people send in questions for a Q&A, or have him post training updates, both of which sound good and will be added to the description. Now we have to sort out the details of how people will send in donations. Ty will look into that. Tabled.

7/17/17 Minutes: Popcorn Politics, Fall Calendar

In Attendance: Anthony, Jackson (secretary), Ty (moderator)
Start time: 7:00 PM

1. Event Review: We co-hosted the movie Pride with the Lincoln DSA. It was a good turnout and a really good film. Jackson says we should consider running it again.

2. Upcoming Events: We’re hosting a DSA discussion on Wednesday and running The Great Dictator on Friday night. We’re ready for them, but Ty reminds us to make sure we promote it well on Facebook.

3. Popcorn Politics:

September: We have decided to start the series on Friday, September 22nd. This is in accordance with two polls on the DSA Facebook, which stated a preference for Friday nights and no preference as for which Friday in September. We have decided that we will run Blade Runner for the first movie night. Anthony will run two more polls on the DSA Facebook to see about film and date preferences for October. We decided we will let the winner of the poll be our October film. It will be an open poll, but it should be pre-loaded with the following films that have already been recommended:

They Live
Reds
Get Out
Mad Max: Fury Road
Snowpiercer

4. Fall Calendar:

September:

7/10/17 Minutes: DSA Collaborations, Starting to Work on Fall Calendar

In attendance: Anthony, Jackson (moderator), Ty (secretary)
Meeting Start: 7:02 PM

1. Upcoming Event – We’re hosting a DSA film night this Friday. The film will be “Pride,” and unless Jade contacts us needing anything else, all we need to do is clean and set up the main room, and have a laptop available to hook up to the projector to show the film.

2. DSA Reading Group Discussion – Jade also contacted us saying that the next week there will be a reading group on the 19th at 6 PM. Jackson says we’ll be available to host these.

3. DSA/Black Cat House Movie Nights – The Black Cat House and Lincoln DSA have been talking about collaborating on screening sci-fi films with political themes. We have pretty much made it official that we should do this, but we’ve decided to gear it towards more general Hollywood films, in order to bill it as “Popcorn Politics.” It’s a little early to advertise it properly, so we’re not going to start immediately, but we want to get some films in this series on the fall BCH calendar. We’re also going to message people and talk to more DSA members to figure out a good date and time to have them. Anthony is going to put up polls on the DSA’s social media in order to see what’s a good day of the week to host them on, since Jackson and Ty would be available to host on most days.

Movie options:
They Live (multiple votes for this, both from the three people present and from other people we have talked to)
Blade Runner
Get Out
Aliens
Mad Max
RoboCop

4. Fall Calendar – We started working on the fall calendar.

September:

October:
Saturday, October 21, 1 to 3 PM: Factory Farming Awareness Coalition Presentation

November:

Ideas:
Popcorn Politics: officially scheduling what nights to show films
Discussion Group: “10 things every white teacher should know when talking about race” (https://thecornerstoneforteachers.com/truth-for-teachers-podcast/10-things-every-white-teacher-know-talking-race)
Family Movie Night: The Brave Little Toaster (potentially collaborating with the Repair Cafe? The themes of the film and why we’d show it in the first place also meshes nicely with their mission. Jackson will message folks he knows from that group on whether they would want to co-sponsor the event somehow)
October Revolution 100 year anniversary: Movie Night “Reds” (potentially part of Popcorn Politics or a separate collaboration with DSA?)
At least two other discussion events: one on the October Revolution in place of or in addition to the film showing?

Ty’s unavailability (greyout days): September 22, 29, 30; October 3, 27
Football game days (blackout): September 2, 16, 23; October 7, 14; November 4, 24

Meeting adjourned: 8:25 PM

Tabled items: Articles for Discussion, Graphic Designer, Stuff to Buy (canopy, stuff to secure bike rack, labels, 7×7 no-slip outdoor mat for porch, new SSD hard drive for public laptop)

7/3/17 Minutes: A Very Short, Internet-less Meeting

In attendance: Jackson (secretary), Ty (moderator)
Start time: 7:02 PM

1. Event Reviews – We showed Paris is Burning on Friday night. The turnout was low, as unfortunately we wound up competing against a fundraiser at the Indian Center.

We also hosted our discussion on Racism, Capitalism, and the American Revolution on Saturday afternoon. We had a good turnout, and a lively discussion. We were even visited by an anarchist from Sweden!

We wound up having two pretty good events, even if we awkwardly dealt with not having Internet access at the House this weekend!

Meeting adjourned: 7:20 PM

Tabled items: Articles for Discussion, Graphic Designer, Stuff to Buy (canopy, stuff to secure bike rack, labels, 7×7 no-slip outdoor mat for porch, new SSD hard drive for public laptop)

6/26/17 Minutes: Movie Nights, Fundraiser

In attendance: Jackson (moderator), James, Ty (secretary), Wyatt
Meeting Start: 7:00 PM

1. Upcoming Events – Movie night on Friday! We’re going to be streaming Paris is Burning, so an easy set up. The film’s been unfortunately double-booked with the Chill & Heal Fest, but Wyatt says that people will be partying all night long so we’re hoping we’ll still be able to attend after the film showing.

Then we’ll be having our Racism, Capitalism, and the American “Revolution” discussion the next day, but besides having some info to present on, we think we’re pretty good.

2. DSA Movie – DSA wants to host a movie here on Friday, July 14th. Jackson isn’t sure exactly what it’s called, but it’s a movie about a coal miners’ strike that was particularly related to the local queer community, and we think it’s a cool subject so we’re cool with them having it here.

3. Robert’s Interview Questions – Robert got back to us with the interview questions; Ty’s going to read them over and draft up a description for the fundraiser. He’s also going to look into GroupRev in addition to Generosity, a site that James recommended because Generosity doesn’t have any fees attached to the donations.

Meeting adjourned: 8:23 PM

Tabled items: Articles for Discussion, Graphic Designer, Stuff to Buy (canopy, stuff to secure bike rack, labels, 7×7 no-slip outdoor mat for porch, new SSD hard drive for public laptop)

6/19/17 Minutes: Questions for Robert, Tilted Scales Recap

In attendance: Jackson (secretary), Ty (moderator)

1. Event Reviews – Jude from Tilted Scales was here on Friday night. Our turnout was a bit disappointing, but it was a late-minute scheduling move and we didn’t get much time to promote it. We’re still glad we were able to meet and hear from him, and get a copy of his book for the lending library. He was paid a $100 stipend from our Speakers Treasury, as was agreed upon at last week’s meeting.

We also tried to host a reading discussion on Saturday afternoon, but it was a bust too! We did end up scheduling at the same time as a Juneteenth celebration downtown, which may have hurt us. (It was being celebrated two days early… we may need to avoid scheduling anything on this whole week of June in the future.) Jackson would like to try another one in the fall.

2. Tabling Invite – We got a mass email from Star City Pride wondering if we want to table there again this year. (We tabled there once several years ago.) We are not interested, because we are unable and unwilling to pony up $120 for that privilege.

3. Interview Questions – We finished our interview questions for Robert, and Ty emailed them out to him.

4. Putting July Events Online – We spent the rest of our meeting as work time to get our July events posted to Facebook and our website.

Meeting adjourned: 8:25 PM

Tabled items: Interview Questions for Robert, Articles for Discussion, Graphic Designer, Stuff to Buy (canopy, stuff to secure bike rack, labels, 7×7 no-slip outdoor mat for porch, new SSD hard drive for public laptop)
