3/12/18 Minutes: Meeting Cancellations, ISO Speaker, Button Order

In attendance: Jackson (moderator), Ty (secretary)
Start time: 7:00 PM

1. Event Review – We had a Popcorn Politics event, which went well and the discussion was good. We did get one person back who had only been to one other event here prior, the Russian Revolution discussion. We got some feedback on that event, though we’re not entirely sure as of yet how to use it and improve events to come, but it’s something we can ponder, process, and evaluate for further discussions like it.

2. Meeting Cancellation – Next Monday there is a forum on organized labor that we don’t want to compete with (and that we most likely will go to ourselves). So we are opting to cancel next week’s weekly meeting. Jackson will also share as much on the Facebook, as well as share info on the forum in question. Jackson also brought up that he will be gone on April 9th, so we are preemptively canceling the meeting that would have been on that date as well.

3. No Ban, No Wall – ISO is sending two people for the “No Ban, No Wall” immigrant rights discussion that we are cosponsoring. UNL isn’t charging for the room rental, and ISO is really only asking for gas money, so any money we donate will be going far to cover this event. There is talks, with the low expenses, of spending our extra funds on snacks for the event.

4. Button Order – A friend of Ty’s contacted us on behalf of his pride group to make a bulk order of pronoun and pride flag buttons. We’d need some more details, but since the friend needs an answer back from us by this Friday, Ty’s going to determine whether we offer to do it, or opt to direct him to another button source, and report back the next meeting we had on what he decided to do.

5. Friends of AK Press – We are officially Friends of AK Press! Ty reports back with the email we received saying as much, and we will begin to scheme soon about the anarchist literature we want to purchase for the library!

Meeting Adjourned: 7:45 PM
Tabled items: Graphic Designer, Stuff to Buy (canopy, stuff to secure bike rack, labels, 7×7 no-slip outdoor mat for porch, new SSD hard drive for public laptop)

3/5/18 Minutes: ISO Speaker, Friends of AK Press

In attendance: Jackson (moderator), Ty (secretary)
Start time: 7:03 PM

1. Event Review – We had our What is Transfeminism discussion on Saturday, and it was a good turnout and a lively talk. Ty thinks he might have been able to structure it a bit better, though he is unsure how he would have done so.

2. Upcoming Event – We have Popcorn Politics coming up, Mad Max: Fury Road! We’re confident we’ve got it ready to go!

3. Speaker – Jackson is working with the committee that was planning on organizing a leftist conference, to bring in a speaker instead. ISO is pushing for a speaker tour through the country in the spring and the committee is working with a few local reps of ISO to bring in a speaker from the ISO, specifically speaking about immigration. This will be on Tuesday, April 10, in the Heritage Room of UNL’s City Campus Union. We have been asked if The Black Cat House be one of the sponsors of this event, and we think that would be a good idea given that Jackson was already a part in getting the event organized.

4. Friends of AK Press – We’re still pondering whether we want to sign up for Friends of AK Press. The 1-year membership is $300, and Jackson believes we have the money for it now. We have agreed to bolster our anarchist literature with a membership, and signed up for it tonight.

Meeting Adjourned: 7:38 PM
Tabled items: Graphic Designer, Stuff to Buy (canopy, stuff to secure bike rack, labels, 7×7 no-slip outdoor mat for porch, new SSD hard drive for public laptop)

2/26/18 Minutes: Whose Streets, Upcoming Events

In attendance: Jackson (secretary), Ty (moderator)
Start time: 7:02 PM

1. Event Review – We watched the documentary Whose Streets? on Friday night. It was a great film, and we had a pretty good turnout and pretty good discussion after the film.

2. Upcoming Event – We’re hosting the community discussion “What is Transfeminism?” on Saturday. Ty is confident he can handle leading the discussion; he just needs to invite his friends and work on the social media hype for the event.

3. Work time – Jackson put up the Facebook event for Anarchism in America while Ty did the above prep for the Transfeminism discussion.

Meeting Adjourned: 7:30 PM

Tabled items: Friends of AK Press, Graphic Designer, Stuff to Buy (canopy, stuff to secure bike rack, labels, 7×7 no-slip outdoor mat for porch, new SSD hard drive for public laptop

2/19/18 Minutes: Whose Streets, Calendars

In attendance: Jackson (moderator), Ty (secretary)
Start time: 7:00 PM

1. Upcoming Event – We have “Whose Streets?” documentary showing coming up this Friday. We have the film, we just have to hype it on Facebook and clean up the room for it.

2. Reimbursement – Ty has been reimbursed $10.19 for printing our spring calendars.

3. Calendar Distribution – Now that the calendars have been printed, Ty needs some help distributing them. Jackson volunteers to distribute calendars south of A street and in the Haymarket.

Meeting adjourned: 7:30 PM

Tabled items: Friends of AK Press, Graphic Designer, Stuff to Buy (canopy, stuff to secure bike rack, labels, 7×7 no-slip outdoor mat for porch, new SSD hard drive for public laptop

2/12/18 Minutes: Finalizing Spring Calendar, Spending Money

In attendance: Jackson (secretary), Ty (moderator)
Start time: 7:00 PM

1. Event Review – We ran _Get Out_ for Popcorn Politics on Friday. The turnout was a little lower than we’d hoped, but the snowy weather may have had something to do with that. The discussion was also unfortunately shorter than we’d hoped. People still seemed to enjoy the film.

2. Whose Streets – Jackson bought the movie, and it came in! Since Chris specifically made a donation to us with covering the movie in mind, we’ll add it to our library and reimburse Jackson the $7.99 he paid for it.

3. Militant – This week’s issue of the Militant came in the mailbox with a notice that our subscription is expiring in two weeks. We decide that Jackson will renew it for another two years ($65) the next time we see Joe. Jackson will be reimbursed for this expense.

2/5/18 Minutes: Event Reviews, Spring Calendar

In attendance: Jackson (moderator), Ty (secretary)
Start time: 7:05 PM

1. Event Reviews – Because we didn’t have a meeting last week, we have three event reviews: our showing of Trapped, the counter-protest, and the African Fight Against Imperialism discussion. Trapped had a good turnout and discussion, the counter-protest went well, and the African Fight Against Imperialism discussion was decent and had good info, but the turnout was low. The co-organizer for the counter-protest might be moving, so we might have to take up making the Facebook event in the future. For the discussion, we think we could have done more advertisement, but we are also concerned that maybe there is just not enough interest in African issues in a place like Lincoln, Nebraska, which is unfortunate if true.

2. Upcoming Event – Our showing of Get Out is imminent! We’re very optimistic about the turnout and the discussion to follow. We think it’s a provocative film, and the online response has been very good so far compared to our other movie nights. Set-up will be easy, and we have the film ready to go.

3. Web Reimbursement – Jackson paid $30.71 for our web domain recently. He is approved for reimbursement.

4. Spring Calendar – We’re still waiting on feedback to schedule Popcorn Politics.

March:
TBD – What is Transfeminism? (a community discussion) [basically open to doing this most any Saturday… we want to schedule the movie(s) first]
TBD – Popcorn Politics
Another movie or documentary?

April:
Saturday, April 14th, 1-3 PM – Reading Discussion: Fueling Dissent
TBD – Popcorn Politics

May:
Saturday, May 5th, 12-5 PM – Open House Party for Karl Marx’s 200th Birthday
Friday, May 11th, 8 AM-6 PM, and Saturday, May 12th, 8 AM-2 PM – The Black Cat House Yard Sale Fundraiser
TBD – Movie Night: Anarchism in America
TBD – Popcorn Politics

Fueling Dissent – https://apps.publicintegrity.org/united-states-of-petroleum/fueling-dissent/

Ideas for other spring calendar events:

1/22/18 Minutes: Spring Calendar, Money, Earth Day

In attendance: Jackson (secretary), Ty (moderator)
Start time: 7:05 PM

1. Event Review – We had our reading/discussion What Every White Person (Teacher) Should Know When Talking About Race. We had a great turnout, and a really good discussion once everyone got comfortable.

2. Upcoming Events – We’re showing the documentary Trapped on Friday night. It looks like we can stream it for free off of Netflix. Otherwise, we’ll just have to set up the room.

We’re also gearing up for the Counter-protest of the Walk For Life on Saturday. We don’t yet know of anyone who needs childcare, but Ty and one other volunteer are planning to be here for that possibility. We may not have any blank posterboards if anyone wants to make a sign, but we have a ton of signs from last year’s event that we can bring again.

3. Reimbursement – Ty spent $5.79 on getting our handouts printed for the discussion on Saturday. Jackson spent $3.49 getting fliers for our counter-protest printed. We’re both getting reimbursed for these expenses.

4. Donations – We got some money! Jackson reports that a friend of ours finally put our PayPal button to use with a $20 donation (but we only received $19.12 because of fees). And our friends in Lincoln DSA cut us a check for $200! Jackson also has a large donation to make. He reminds Ty that we were considering becoming “Friends of AK Press” to load up on more anarchist lit. The last item of this discussion is tabled.

5. Lincoln Earth Day – Ty got an email asking us to table again. It’ll be on April 28th, and registration would be $35 for us. We’re not interested in going back this year, as we’ve not really seen sufficient benefits to match our costs of time and energy tabling for the better part of a Saturday there. We’ll still be sure not to schedule any events here that day.

6. Spring Calendar – Jackson reports that Popcorn Politics will be returning for monthly showings throughout the Spring Calendar!

March:
TBD – What is Transfeminism? (a community discussion) [basically open to doing this most any Saturday… we want to schedule the movie(s) first]
TBD – Popcorn Politics
Another movie or documentary?

7. No Meeting Next Week – Just a reminder that we will be off next week.

Meeting adjourned: 8:25 PM

Tabled items: Friends of AK Press, Spring Calendar, Graphic Designer, Stuff to Buy (canopy, stuff to secure bike rack, labels, 7×7 no-slip outdoor mat for porch, new SSD hard drive for public laptop

1/15/18 Minutes: Spring Calendar Planning

In attendance: Jackson (moderator), Ty (secretary)
Start time: 7:00 PM

1. Event Review – Popcorn Politics went well last week. Good turnout, decent discussion, but an intense movie. Maybe focus on more fun movies in the future, but it was too appropriate a movie for the subject matter we wanted to address to pass up.

2. Upcoming Event – We have a reading discussion this Saturday: 10 Things Every White Person Should Know When Talking About Race. Ty will take care of prepping and printing 15 copies of the reading.

3. Spring Calendar –
April:
April 21?, 1-3 PM – Reading Discussion: Fueling Dissent

May:
May 5, 12-5 PM – Open House Party for Karl Marx’s 200th Birthday
May 11, 8 AM-6 PM, and May 12, 8 AM-2 PM – The Black Cat House Yard Sale Fundraiser

Other: Little Red Singalong

Grey Out Days: March 30/31/April 1 (alt weekend for Red State), April 6/7/8 (Red State Conference), April 28 (Lincoln Earth Day)

1/8/18 Minutes: No Meeting Jan 29th, Spring Calendar

In attendance: Jackson (secretary), Ty (moderator)
Start time: 7:01 PM

1. Upcoming Event – Our next Popcorn Politics is this Friday! Jackson has the movie, and he just needs to keep hyping it. And we need to clean up the room a bit.

2. Meeting Cancellation – Ty will be unable to attend our regularly-scheduled meeting on January 29th. We’ll cancel that week’s meeting.

3. Spring Calendar –

Ideas left over from Winter brainstorming:

Discussions: liberation theology, national liberation movement/separatism, prison-industrial complex

Movies: Anarchism in America

Other: Little Red Singalong, Karl Marx’s 200th Birthday Party on May 5th

Want: Feminism-centric for March?

Tabled items: Articles for Discussion, Graphic Designer, Stuff to Buy (canopy, stuff to secure bike rack, labels, 7×7 no-slip outdoor mat for porch, new SSD hard drive for public laptop

12/18/17 Minutes: Meeting Cancellations, Event Postings

In attendance: Jackson (moderator), Ty (secretary)

Start time: 7:00 PM

1. Event Review – RoboCop went pretty good! It was a good turnout and everyone enjoyed it. Popcorn Politics seems to have a solid base of people coming to them, which is good to hear and means we can sustain the series for longer.

2. Meeting Cancellation – The next two weekly meetings are on Christmas and New Year’s Day respectively, so we’re opting to cancel them since it’s unlikely anyone will attend and our projected agendas for them would be minimal.

3. January Events – We have Popcorn Politics, a reading discussion, and a documentary coming up in January. We also have a counter-protest, but the event page is already up for it. We spent the rest of the time putting the event pages up for the rest.

Tabled items: Articles for Discussion, Graphic Designer, Stuff to Buy (canopy, stuff to secure bike rack, labels, 7×7 no-slip outdoor mat for porch, new SSD hard drive for public laptop

Meeting adjourned: 8:30 PM
