Movie Night: The Elements of Mutual Aid

Movie Night: The Elements of Mutual Aid

August 4, 2026

We're excited to be hosting a special documentary on a special Tuesday night screening. We're running on an unusual night because we'll actually have a co-director in the room to lead our discussion afterwards and answer questions from the audience!

We will be watching part of the brand-new documentary miniseries _The Elements of Mutual Aid_. It is an independent production of four hour-long episodes; we'll be watching one of those parts and then discussing it afterwards with our special guest. The series explores community-led survival projects that confront crisis with care. The producers specifically met with more than 60 activists involved in 15 different organizations across North America that are doing this work.

An additional comment from the co-directors:

"This series gathers the voices of community organizers who are tending grassroots alternatives to systems of oppression. In intimate interviews, we discuss the nuanced work of building trust between neighbors, making decisions horizontally, protecting our communities, sharing the responsibility of communal infrastructure, and more. Our screening tour has found a lot of success with highlighting these events as an opportunity for communities to discuss their work, reflect on the moment we're in, and strategize about deepening your mutual aid practice."

We really don't get the opportunity here in Lincoln to hear from these perspectives very often, so we're hoping several of our friends will come out to watch this documentary and meet with its makers. Our events are always free, but we will encourage those who can to donate toward our guests' travel expenses.

Once again, this event is free and open to the public. The Black Cat House welcomes all ages, and is a drug and alcohol-free venue. To help keep everyone safe and healthy, we ask that all guests wear face masks in our space. We are wheelchair accessible.
