The Black Cat House is known for holding events, but we have a lot more to offer, too.
Our Garden
We’re pretty proud of our urban garden in the middle of Lincoln, NE. The video above gives a brief tour of our rainwater collection system, raised beds, and the food we grow to feed ourselves and the people around us. We’re also working on making our ecological impact lighter by smothering the bluegrass lawn that was originally growing here, and replacing it with native buffalo grass. Everything we do, we’ve done with scrap, recycled materials, and repurposed items. We collect and save seeds to make sure our plants stay resilient in our neck of the woods, too.
The Library
We also cultivate a massive library with hundreds of books about a variety of topics. No matter what you’re interested in, we probably have a book you might want to read. We’re working on cataloging our library’s contents so you can browse the titles we have from our site. For now, you’ll have to see the books for yourselves. Checking books out is free–no card needed.
Our library also contains a bunch of archived zines. Many of them are informational in nature, and we’re happy to take donations of books and zines. While we do have a rack of zines that you’re welcome to take copies from, the archived ones are for browsing only. However, if you find a few you really like, we have a copy machine so you can have a print of your very own.
Office Supplies
Speaking of zines, we also have plenty of supplies for making and distributing zines, including the aforementioned copy machine, a long-arm stapler, pens, pencils, markers, tape, glue, and so on. If you like to wear your heart on your sleeve, we also have a button-press for making your own, custom designs.
