In attendance: Jackson (secretary), Ty (moderator)
Start time: 7:00 PM
1. Event Review – We showed 416 on Saturday night. Turnout was a bit low, but the discussion was very good.
2. Upcoming Event – Trekkies For Humanism returns this Friday. We’re ready for it. We’ll be sure to plug it on Facebook in the next couple of days.
3. Reimbursement – Jackson bought some new dry-erase markers for the house, as ours were dried out. We reimburse him $3.21 for the expense.
4. Copy Machine – We still need to replace ours. Jackson will see what he can find locally. We’re thinking we have a budget of around $200.
5. Sama – The concert/discussion is coming up fast! Sammi reports he is nearly done with our flier. Jackson will be making the Facebook event at the conclusion of the meeting tonight, and will also be sending Sama another follow-up email.
6. Fall Calendar – Ty still needs some digital files to build the calendar; he’ll need to contact Ashley about that.
Meetings are returning to Monday nights at 7 PM. Open hours will not return for fall.

February 9, 2024(1 event) – We're honoring Black History Month at the Black Cat House by showing _10,000 Black Men Named George_ for our February movie. It's a 2002 Made-for-TV movie directed by Robert Townsend. It stars Andre Braugher, Charles S. Dutton, and Mario Van Peebles. It is a dramatization of labor activist A. Philip Randolph's work to unionize the Black porters of the Pullman Rail Company in the early 1900s. The film's title refers to the Pullman company's official policy for its passengers to address all of the porters as "George" because George Pullman was their boss and owner of the company. The film has been praised for its depiction of the unique struggles of the Pullman porters and the union organizers who represented them, as both had to simultaneously deal with Jim Crow racism as well as the working-class struggle to organize labor at a time when unions had far fewer legal rights. Discussion will follow the film. This event is free and open to the public. The Black Cat House welcomes all ages, and is a drug and alcohol-free venue. To help keep everyone safe and healthy, we ask that all guests wear face masks in our space. We are wheelchair accessible. |

February 17, 2024(1 event) – "Black Lives Matter" was everywhere in the summer of 2020. It was printed on corporate T-shirts, painted on the endzones of NFL stadiums, and of course all over social media. And it has since been answered with a backlash from the political right, who have been furiously trying to ban all kinds of education about race in our schools. Does it feel like the argument about race has been everywhere lately? Is this a new development, or has it been a defining issue of this country for centuries?
Join us for our next community discussion at the Black Cat House, where we will be exploring how White supremacy was a foundational value here in the United States. Let's talk about how this country was founded on land stolen from Indigenous people, and disproportionately built by enslaved Africans. While racism has evolved over the centuries, its impact has been nearly uninterrupted. Let's trace that up to contemporary disparities in wealth and police brutality.
This event is free and open to the public. The Black Cat House welcomes all ages, and is a drug and alcohol-free venue. To help keep everyone safe and healthy, we ask that all guests wear face masks in our space. We are wheelchair accessible.
