7/22/15 Minutes: Copy Machine, Sama, Fall Calendar

In attendance: Jackson (secretary), Ty (moderator)
Start time: 7:00 PM

1. Event Review – We showed 416 on Saturday night. Turnout was a bit low, but the discussion was very good.

2. Upcoming Event – Trekkies For Humanism returns this Friday. We’re ready for it. We’ll be sure to plug it on Facebook in the next couple of days.

3. Reimbursement – Jackson bought some new dry-erase markers for the house, as ours were dried out. We reimburse him $3.21 for the expense.

4. Copy Machine – We still need to replace ours. Jackson will see what he can find locally. We’re thinking we have a budget of around $200.

5. Sama – The concert/discussion is coming up fast! Sammi reports he is nearly done with our flier. Jackson will be making the Facebook event at the conclusion of the meeting tonight, and will also be sending Sama another follow-up email.

6. Fall Calendar – Ty still needs some digital files to build the calendar; he’ll need to contact Ashley about that.

Meetings are returning to Monday nights at 7 PM. Open hours will not return for fall.

Will we continue to run Trekkies For Humanism?

May Day

May 1, 2025

May 1st is Labor Day for most of the world. Even though this tradition is mostly lost in the U.S., the reality is that the holiday really started here and became an annual tradition worldwide in response to the sacrifices of the Haymarket Martyrs.

(This is not specifically an event at The Black Cat House. This is an historical reminder.)

Yard Sale Fundraiser + Bake Sale

May 9, 2025

It's almost time for our annual yard sale! This is the only time of the year where we ask for your financial support. The sale will be on Friday, May 9th (8 AM to 6 PM) and Saturday, May 10th (8 AM to 2 PM). Save the dates!

The short version:

We are accepting donations now! We usually say "no clothes!", but we're pretty happy to take most anything else that you'd imagine we could sell at a yard sale. We're also experimenting this year with adding a bake sale to the festivities, and we have a list of ingredients and supplies needed if you'd like to contribute that way. Please hit us up ASAP if you'd like to donate. This description will be updated closer to the sale dates with a list of what we'll be offering for sale.

The long version:

1. We are ready for your donations! Please reach out to us ASAP, or you can leave your stuff on our porch at 1601 B Street. We are all guilty of procrastinating at one time or another, but the quicker you can get us your donations the better off we'll be at getting everything sorted and priced for May 9th.

2. No Clothes! We've learned the hard way over the years that most of the clothing that people would donate just isn't worth our time, so we try to avoid it. If you think you have something truly exceptional like a new pair of expensive shoes or a nice leather jacket, we *might* hear you out.

3. We are interested in *almost* anything that we can sell at our yard sale. The strength of our previous yard sales is partly due to the sheer quantity and variety of items that we can put out every year. The following is by no means a comprehensive list of things we've sold over the years: small appliances, electronics, collectibles, books, video games, board games, toys, household goods, art, decorations, and extra seedling plants from our gardener friends. You can reach out and ask us if we'd be interested in what you have, but the answer is probably going to be YES!

4. We're also going to be doing a bake sale during the yard sale this year! Our kitchen crew will be baking cookies and brownies that you'll be able to buy during our sale. We have a list of ingredients that we would love to get donations of to keep our costs down, so please reach out if you have any of those things cluttering your pantry. (See the list at the very bottom of this post.)

5. Come and Shop! We'd love to see you during the sale on Friday, May 9th and/or Saturday, May 10th. If you're someone who likes to rummage at these sales, you'll probably find something interesting amidst our huge, diverse array of offerings.

6. Yes, we can also take your money if you want to donate more directly to our fundraiser. Some prefer to think of themselves as financial "angels" who may be paying for someone else coming through after them. Such angels give us more leeway to give away useful things to people who may need them but can't actually afford them (like single mothers and daycare providers).

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you for your continued support of our activities here!

Supplies we are seeking for our bake sale:

30-36 eggs (preferably from backyard chickens)
10 cups unsweetened applesauce
20 lbs flour
4 oz baking soda
12 lbs butter
15 lbs sugar
2 tbsp molasses
12 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
8 lbs vegan butter
8 cups non-dairy/vegan chocolate chips
6 cups sprinkles
6 cups powdered sugar

saran wrap or parchment paper
aluminum serving pans (size 9" x 13" or larger)
