In attendance: Jackson (secretary), Ty (moderator)
Start time: 7:00 PM
1. Event Review – We showed 416 on Saturday night. Turnout was a bit low, but the discussion was very good.
2. Upcoming Event – Trekkies For Humanism returns this Friday. We’re ready for it. We’ll be sure to plug it on Facebook in the next couple of days.
3. Reimbursement – Jackson bought some new dry-erase markers for the house, as ours were dried out. We reimburse him $3.21 for the expense.
4. Copy Machine – We still need to replace ours. Jackson will see what he can find locally. We’re thinking we have a budget of around $200.
5. Sama – The concert/discussion is coming up fast! Sammi reports he is nearly done with our flier. Jackson will be making the Facebook event at the conclusion of the meeting tonight, and will also be sending Sama another follow-up email.
6. Fall Calendar – Ty still needs some digital files to build the calendar; he’ll need to contact Ashley about that.
Meetings are returning to Monday nights at 7 PM. Open hours will not return for fall.

July 12, 2024(1 event) Movie Night: To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar – LGBTQ+ Pride Month is technically over, but our celebration continues! Our July movie night is the 1995 comedy film, "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar," starring Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo. Two New York drag queens, Vida Boheme (Swayze) and Noxeema Jackson (Snipes), win a Hollywood trip to take part in the "Miss Drag Queen of America Pageant." Selling their two tickets and buying a Cadillac, they take the inexperienced drag "princess" Chi-Chi Rodriguez (Leguizamo) under their wings and set off cross-country. Due to a racist sheriff and their car breaking down, they end up stranded for a weekend in a rural small town... Out of films we considered for a queer feature, "To Wong Foo" rose to the top of our list as a hometown favorite. Much of the rural scenes were shot on location in Lincoln, Omaha, and Loma, Nebraska. An impressive local legacy, to have our state as the home of the first Hollywood production to have drag queen leads! As always, we recommend www.doesthedogdie.com to review any potential content that might be upsetting. But since these are prominent sources of conflict in this film, we want to warn of the following: queerphobia, racism (and specifically anti-Black and anti-Latine slurs), domestic abuse, threats of sexual violence, and abuses by cops. Discussion will follow the movie. This event is free and open to the public. The Black Cat House welcomes all ages, and is a drug and alcohol-free venue. To help keep everyone safe and healthy, we ask that all guests wear face masks in our space. We are wheelchair accessible. |

July 27, 2024(2 events) Amazon's Prime Problems (a community discussion) – What's concerning about the "Everything Store?" More info to come. Amazon's Prime Problems (a community discussion) – Amazon is one of the largest corporations in the world. Its customers can buy almost anything at their convenience and enjoy incredibly fast delivery to their door. Even its subsidiaries like Whole Foods, Twitch, Audible, and Ring doorbells are household names. Amazon has grown so big and so fast that it's increasingly difficult to avoid doing business with them. But there are also many troubling questions... How does a billionaire monopolist like Jeff Bezos enjoy a liberal public image despite crushing countless small businesses? How does the constant overproduction and worldwide shipping of cheap junk affect the environment? How does Amazon treat its workers? What is dropshipping? Come discuss this and more with us at the Black Cat House on July 27th from 1-3 PM. |
