7/22/15 Minutes: Copy Machine, Sama, Fall Calendar

In attendance: Jackson (secretary), Ty (moderator)
Start time: 7:00 PM

1. Event Review – We showed 416 on Saturday night. Turnout was a bit low, but the discussion was very good.

2. Upcoming Event – Trekkies For Humanism returns this Friday. We’re ready for it. We’ll be sure to plug it on Facebook in the next couple of days.

3. Reimbursement – Jackson bought some new dry-erase markers for the house, as ours were dried out. We reimburse him $3.21 for the expense.

4. Copy Machine – We still need to replace ours. Jackson will see what he can find locally. We’re thinking we have a budget of around $200.

5. Sama – The concert/discussion is coming up fast! Sammi reports he is nearly done with our flier. Jackson will be making the Facebook event at the conclusion of the meeting tonight, and will also be sending Sama another follow-up email.

6. Fall Calendar – Ty still needs some digital files to build the calendar; he’ll need to contact Ashley about that.

Meetings are returning to Monday nights at 7 PM. Open hours will not return for fall.

Will we continue to run Trekkies For Humanism?

Columbus Day Counter-Protest @ 16th and O Streets

October 14, 2024

Christopher Columbus was an architect of rape, murder, settler-colonialism, slavery, and genocide. He never set foot anywhere in what is now called the United States. But Monday, October 14th is still recognized as Columbus Day at the local, state, and federal levels.
Indigenous Peoples' Day is recognized by the city of Lincoln and state of Nebraska, and Biden was the first U.S. president to acknowledge Indigenous Peoples' Day on a federal level in 2021. But this acknowledgment is happening on ALL levels alongside, NOT instead of, Columbus Day! We are officially celebrating our Native peoples and the man who terrorized their ancestors on the SAME DAY.
If you think that sounds ridiculously disrespectful, then join The Black Cat House as we protest Columbus Day in front of the Federal Building on the corner of 16th and O Streets, October 14th from 4:30-6 PM. We'll have plenty of signs to spare, and some materials to make your own on the spot. We also have educational zines to hand out to passersby, if you'd like to help distribute or to grab a zine or two for yourself or a friend!

Movie Night: They Live

October 18, 2024

The Black Cat House's October movie night is here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and we're all outta bubblegum!

We'll be showing the 1988 sci-fi/horror classic They Live, directed by the great John Carpenter. The film stars WWE Hall-of-Famer "Rowdy" Roddy Piper as a drifter who gets a special pair of sunglasses that allows him to see through the propaganda and realize that the Earth has been invaded by greedy capitalist aliens! He must then seek allies and find ways to fight back. It may be cheesy in places, but it's also a much-loved action classic of the '80s AND a metaphor for the political situation in the Reagan Era. Last but not least, this film continues to inspire some pretty good political memes.

Discussion will follow the movie.

This event is free and open to the public. The Black Cat House welcomes all ages, and is a drug and alcohol-free venue. To help keep everyone safe and healthy, we ask that all guests wear face masks in our space. We are wheelchair accessible.

Can We Vote Our Way Out Of This Mess? (a community discussion)

October 26, 2024

We are approaching another presidential election, and that means that the political attention span of most Americans is approaching the peak that we only see once every four years. All of the usual suspects are back with their predictable talking points. And once again the Black Cats are asking, "Can we vote our way out of this mess?!"

We hope you can join us for this community discussion about electoral politics. Let's consider how we got into this predicament, vent about current affairs, and maybe even try to imagine some alternatives. And let's explore this with more depth than bumper-sticker slogans.

This event is free and open to the public. The Black Cat House welcomes all ages, and is a drug and alcohol-free venue. To help keep everyone safe and healthy, we ask that all guests wear face masks in our space. We are wheelchair accessible.
