2023 Labor Wins: A Community Discussion

January 13, 2024

2023 was a momentous year for labor organizing. There were large-scale strikes in many industries, ending in contracts the workers were happy with. What were some of the highlight?

  • May 2nd: The Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike for nearly 5 months, fighting Hollywood and streaming services for months to gain proper compensation and defend their creative talents against AI-generated copycats.
  • July 14th: The Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) went on strike for similar reasons, and fought for almost as long (just shy of 4 months).
  • September 15th: United Auto Workers (UAW) faced off against Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis at the same time. The strike lasted for 46 days.
  • October 4th-7th: Kaiser Permanente workers, organizing with a coalition of unions, carried out the largest healthcare strike in U.S. history.

This list doesn't include many other smaller strikes that happened all over the country and across different industries. What do these labor struggles have in common? They all won!

We're kicking off 2024 at the Black Cat House with a meeting on January 13th to reflect on the past year and ask ourselves: What happened? Why now? And, perhaps most importantly... How can we accomplish even more in 2024?

This event is free and open to the public. The Black Cat House welcomes all ages, and is a drug and alcohol-free venue. To help keep everyone safe and healthy, we ask that all guests wear face masks in our space. We are wheelchair accessible.

Movie Night: Space Sweepers

January 19, 2024

For our January movie night, we'll be watching the South Korean sci-fi action movie, Space Sweepers. Released in 2021 direct to Netflix, the film is directed by Jo Sung-hee, and stars Song Joong-ki, Kim Tae-ri, Jin Seon-kyu and Yoo Hae-jin.

Space Sweepers tells the story of a motley crew whose precarious living situations force them into the dangerous work of orbital debris removal. When they discover a little girl, who might be a bomb, bioweapon, or messiah, it puts them in the sights of a post-human industrialist and his vanity geo-engineering project.

While serving as satisfying popcorn fare, it also punches above its weight in portraying desperate servitude under capitalism, the dangerous egocentric ambitions of the super-rich, multi-cultural work solidarity, and economic barriers to trans healthcare.

This event is free and open to the public. The Black Cat House welcomes all ages, and is a drug and alcohol-free venue. To help keep everyone safe and healthy, we ask that all guests wear face masks in our space. We are wheelchair accessible.

Counter-Protesting the Anti-Choice "Walk For Life" at the Nebraska State Capitol

January 27, 2024

Nebraska's Religious Right is preparing for its biggest rally of the year, and they have special reason to celebrate this time. The Walk For Life is an annual protest against the right to abortion and birth control that is always scheduled to be near the anniversary of the Supreme Court's 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, which finally made abortion legal nationwide. Unfortunately, Roe was overturned a year and a half ago, and further restrictions on abortion access were passed in the Nebraska legislature. So how are we, the pro-choice majority in Nebraska, going to respond?

The next Walk for Life is coming to the Nebraska State Capitol on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 10:00 AM. The "pro-life" crowd will once again get on their buses and travel all over the country to promote their sexist, theocratic agenda. They'll have a big pep rally on the north steps of the Capitol, and all the leading Republican politicians in the state will be there to address them.

And we, the pro-choice Nebraskans, will be there to counter-protest them! We will promote bodily autonomy and a person’s right to choose. We will remind them that we are still here, and not afraid of winter weather.

We will once again be meeting on the north side of K Street across from the north steps of the Capitol. We will be between Centennial Mall (aka 15th Street) and 16th Street. We are often in front of the government office building at 1526 K Street. After the Republican pep rally ends at the Capitol, their folks are once again going to march down the middle of 14th Street to additional indoor programming at the UNL Student Union. When they march down 14th Street, we will march alongside them on the sidewalks on the east side. We will conclude once again with a small rally on the sidewalk south of the Union at 14th and R Street. Some of the anti-choicers go right inside to the Union for their additional programming, some will get back onto the buses to take them home, and some will linger outside a while and want to argue with us. While we'll be outdoors the whole time, we'll also be standing next to a large, concentrated body of people who are proven to not care about the safety and health of others. Wearing a mask is recommended.

Pro-choice Americans have spent the last half-century relying upon the fragile law of Roe to protect reproductive freedom, but it is now gone. It is long past time for those who believe in bodily autonomy (including access to abortion) to rebuild a mass movement in the streets. We need people to show up and protest the Walk for Life!
